NEWZ:TRS leader hacked to death

Hyderabad, March 27 (IANS) Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) leader and former top Maoist Sambasivudu was hacked to death by unidentified assailants in Andhra Pradesh's Nalgonda district, police said Sunday.
He was attacked late Saturday at Gokaram when he was returning after attending 'Telangana dhoom dham', a cultural programme to demand a separate Telangana state, at Sangem in Valigonda mandal of Nalgonda district, about 120 km from here.
About 15 assailants in two cars chased Sambasivudu who was travelling in a car with his five supporters at around midnight. The attackers forced the TRS leader's vehicle to stop and attacked him with swords, sickles and other sharp-edged weapons. Three of his supporters were injured when they tried to save him.
The 46-year-old succumbed to his injuries while being shifted to Hyderabad, police said.
The body of Sambasivudu, who was allegedly involved in attacks on former chief ministers N. Chandrababu Naidu and N. Janardhan Reddy, has been kept at Gandhi Hospital where an autopsy will be conducted Sunday.
His family members alleged that police were involved in the killing. They said police used its agent and former Maoist Nayeem to kill Sambasivudu.
The former state secretary of the Communist Party of India-Maoist had surrendered before then home minister Jana Reddy in 2009 on grounds of ill-health. He had reportedly developed differences with other Maoist leaders.
Last year, he joined TRS and was made politburo member of the party, which is spearheading the movement for a separate Telangana state.
Sambasivudu, who joined Maoist ranks in 1990, was involved in 80 cases of violence, including attack on Chandrababu Naidu in 2003, failed assassination bid on N. Janardhan Reddy, and also the Balimela attack on June 29, 2008, in which 38 policemen belonging to anti-Maoist force Greyhounds were killed.

New Delhi, March 27 (AFP): India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and his Pakistan counterpart Shahid Afridi will be involved in an engrossing battle of wits in the eagerly- awaited World Cup semi-final in Mohali on Wednesday.
Afridi's team ended Australia's unbeaten 34-match streak at the World Cup with a win in a league match, while Dhoni's side knocked the defending champions out of the tournament in the quarter-finals.
Dhoni and Afridi have so far proved adept at reading the situations and did not hesitate embracing unorthodoxy, like opening the attack with a spinner in a bid to wrong-foot the opposition.
The Indian captain opened the bowling with off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin in the quarter-final against Australia on a slow Ahmedabad track and the move paid off as the spinner removed in-form Shane Watson (25) in the 10th over.
Dhoni needs to intelligently use his limited bowling resources again as he has so far not seriously felt the absence of a fifth specialist bowler, thanks to part-time spinner Yuvraj Singh's 11 wickets in seven matches.
The Indian captain was also proved right when he included Suresh Raina in place of hard-hitting Yusuf Pathan against Australia. Raina did not let his captain down as he was involved in a match-winning stand of 74 with Yuvraj.
"I prefer to go by instinct (in some situations)," said Dhoni.
India have so far lost just one game, against South Africa when their last nine wickets fell for 29 runs, and Dhoni was quick to remind his batsmen not to play for the gallery but for the team.
Pakistan have so far looked a disciplined and well-knit unit, thanks to Afridi's leadership qualities.
Afridi may not have shown his batting prowess, but has done well as a leg-spinner and fielder. He is the tournament's leading bowler with 21 wickets in seven matches.
He has persisted with wicketkeeper-batsman Kamran Akmal, who had an off-day against New Zealand when he let off Ross Taylor early in the innings. The New Zealander went on to score a century in his team's victory.
It was the only defeat suffered by Pakistan, but Afridi did not regret his decision as Akmal grew in confidence with each game and was involved a century stand in his team's quarter-final win over the West Indies.
Afridi's moves to promote Akmal as an opener, bring Asad Shafiq in the middle order and playing off-spinner Saeed Ajmal against the West Indies have also paid off.

NEWZ:Quake kills 63 in Myanmar, aftershock rattles Thailand

MAE SAI, Thailand (Reuters) - At least 63 people were killed in a strong earthquake that struck Myanmar, state media said On Friday, while a series of aftershocks have caused panic but only limited damage from Thailand to Laos.
The death toll from Thursday's 6.8 magnitude tremor was expected to rise slightly in Myanmar after more than 100 buildings were destroyed. Over 100 people were injured, according to state television.
The quake sparked panic, but no major damage, in other countries across Southeast Asia. This month's devastating Japan quake and tsunami have revived memories of the even more powerful 2004 Indonesia quake and tsunami which killed around 226,000 people.
An aftershock, an estimated magnitude of 5.5, rattled Thailand on Friday but caused limited damage, although residents living close to the epicentre were advised to leave their homes.
The initial quake shook the famous "Golden Triangle" region, where Myanmar, Thailand and Laos meet. It was felt in the capital cities of Thailand and Myanmar and as far away as Vietnam, where people in tall buildings were evacuated.
It was 6.2 miles (10 km) below the surface but caused only slight damage on the Thai side.
The town of Tachilek in Myanmar was badly hit by Thursday's quake. People fled their homes and cracks were seen in the roads.
"We were extremely frightened to enter the house since there were several strong aftershocks," a teacher said by telephone. "Some people are haunted by what they saw on TV about the recent earthquake in Japan."
The Red Cross said a hospital in Tachilek had been damaged and trained local volunteers had been mobilised to provide relief and first aid.
FEARS OF AFTERSHOCKS
Thursday's quake was centred 111 km (69 miles) north of Chiang Rai, Thailand's northernmost province and a sparsely populated, hilly area. It forms part of the Golden Triangle, a popular tourist destination and famous for the cultivation of illicit opium.
In Chiang Rai's main town, little damage was seen. The spires of several Buddhist pagodas were bent, some tiles were smashed and a few cracks were seen on the ground close to a hotel.
Fearing more aftershocks, people in the province's Mae Sai district, 60 km from the epicentre, had left their houses and were seen setting up makeshift shelters in open spaces.
Somchai Hatyatanti, Chiang Rai provincial governor, said cracks were seen in some buildings. Power was briefly knocked out and some telephone lines were down.
Bountheun Menevilay, head of the disaster preparedness division of the Red Cross in neighbouring Laos, said the quake was felt strongly in the thinly populated border provinces of Luang Namtha and Bokeo, but no deaths or injuries were reported.
Vibul Sguanpong, director general of Thailand's Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, said there had been dozens of aftershocks.
"We urge those in very old houses or tall, old buildings near the northern border with Myanmar to check for cracks and other signs of damage, and consider leaving for the next two days while aftershocks are likely," he said.

entertaintmentzzz:Bollywood Stars Without Make-Up

Bollywood Stars Without Make-Up

Bollywood actresses are known for their beauty and style. They are glorified on screens as demi-goddesses who are blessed with ethereal beauty.

But its now time for some reality check as the actresses don't really look like the perfect dreamgirls once they are stripped off their make-up. Lets take a look at how different actresses look without their usual dose of make-up.

Sonam

Bollywood's number one fashionista isn't very attractive to look at once her make-up comes off. In this pic, Sonam far from the glam diva that she always is.

Katrina Kaif
Katrina Kaif doesn't look much different without make-up. She is one naturally blessed woman in terms of beauty and, hence, can easily survive without make-up. She looks beautiful in her most basic and natural avatar.

Rani Mukherjee
Yes! The person you see in the pic is indeed Rani Mukherjee. And, she sure does look horrendous without her make-up on. Our advise to her would be not to step out of the house without any make-up or she might end up losing the few films that she's got in hand.

Deepika Padukone
Sans make-up, Deepika looks like any other face in the crowd. It is after a good dose of grooming that Deepika manages to look like the stunner that she always appears to be.

Kareena Kapoor
Kareena Kapoor also looks amazingly beautiful even without any trace of make-up. Guess its owing to her genes and a healthy lifestyle that always ensures that she looks radiant and glowing.

Priyanka Chopra
The glamorous Piggy Chops looks like as bad without make-up as as she looks good with it. She seems like a totally different person from the gorgeous star that we all know

Kajol
Kajol has always shocked us with her sense of style in the past and she does the same by coming forth without proper grooming. No matter what the occasion is, there can be no excuse for turning up looking like this in public.

Firefox Add-on Firesheep Brings Hacking to the Masses

Want to hack someone else's Amazon, Facebook, Twitter or Windows Live account in just one click? A Firefox extension called Firesheep claims you can by hijacking a person's current user session over an open Wi-Fi connection
Firesheep was created by Seattle-based software developer Eric Butler who said he created the extension to highlight the security risks associated with session hijacking, also known as sidejacking.

Firesheep targets 26 online services, and includes many popular online services such as Amazon, Facebook, Foursquare, Google, The New York Times, Twitter, Windows Live, Wordpress and Yahoo. The extension is also customizable allowing a hacker to target other Websites not listed by Firesheep.
tested the extension out and to my horror it works as advertized - almost that is.
While Firesheep sounds scary (and once again highlights the security concerns of using open Wi-Fi) the new Firefox extension is not as frightening as it sounds.
How Firesheep works

Firesheep is basically a packet sniffer that can analyze all the unencrypted Web traffic on an open Wi-Fi connection between a Wi-Fi router and the personal computers on the same network. The extension waits for someone to log in to any of the 26 sites listed in Firesheep's database. When you log in to Amazon, for example, your browser's Amazon-specific cookie communicates with the site and contains personally identifying information such as your user name and an Amazon session number ID.

As your browser swaps cookie information back and forth with the Website a third party can hijack that communication and capture info including your user name and session ID. Typically, the cookie will not contain your password. But even without your password, the fact that Firesheep has snagged your session cookie means that a hacker can, at least in theory, access your account and gain virtually unrestricted access. If the hacker got your Yahoo Mail cookie they could send an e-mail, if it was Facebook they may be able to post a message and so on. Any operations that require your password, however, such as accessing your credit card information on Amazon should not be possible using Firesheep
Firesheep put to the test

Click to EnlargeSince I wasn't close to a public Wi-Fi hotspot today, I tested Firesheep on my own home network using Firefox 3.6 for Mac OS X. The problem is I use WPA2 encryption at home, a Wi-Fi security standard that encrypts all user traffic going between your PC and the router. So the only way I could test Firesheep was on my own machine, which I did by browsing on both Firefox and Chrome.

To get started I installed Firesheep on Firefox, and then opened it up by clicking on View>Sidebars>Firesheep. I then saw a blank sidebar with a button at the top that said "Start Capturing." Once I clicked the button to start snooping, the extension asked for my computer's master password so that the extension could access and make changes to my machine. Needless to say, this is not something I would recommend you try on your own computer.

After the sidebar was working it started grabbing user IDs as promised for sites I logged in to including Amazon, Facebook, Google and The New York Times. Firesheep was able to grab my user name and profile photo (when available) and then display each account in the sidebar.

Theoretically, if I had tested this system over an unencrypted Wi-Fi network at a cafe, I should have been able to simply click on any of the accounts I saw in the Firesheep sidebar and then gain almost unrestricted access to the account. But in my tests that's not what happened.
Firesheep gets corralled
After the sniffing was done, It was supposed to be able to click on each user ID listed in my sidebar and then see my online accounts. Obviously, It was able to do this when using an account It'd logged in to using Firefox since the browser contained my actual session IDs as well as the stolen cookies sitting in Firesheep. But when It tried to gain access to my New York Times account that It'd logged in to using Chrome, Firesheep couldn't give me access to my account in Firefox. This was despite the fact that my user name and profile picture appeared in Firesheep.
It's also important to note that once It logged out of any of the online services It tested, It could not use Firesheep's stolen cookie to log back in.

Now, as It said, my tests were not perfect since It was using Firesheep on one machine, and my home network is very secure already. So my test may have gone differently if I had tested Firesheep on an unsuspecting user over an open, unencrypted Wi-Fi network at a cafe or bar
Firesheep Sidejacking limits

There's no question that Firesheep highlights an important Web browsing security flaw that could expose your account to a malicious hacker. But it's also important to keep in mind that sidejacking has its limits. Using Firesheep is not likely to expose your user password. So a hacker may be able to use Firesheep to take action on your behalf such as send an e-mail, post a status update, or send out a tweet. But it's unlikely that Firesheep could be used to steal your account by switching your password on you. Unless, of course, you are using a service that lets you change your password without entering the current one--a rare occurrence these days.

Nevertheless, Firesheep, and sidejacking in general, is still a serious security threat if you happen to be using open or unprotected Wi-Fi. Here are a few basic things you can do to protect yourself when using public Wi-Fi.

Use A VPN

Try using a Virtual Private Network client such as the free version of HotSpot Shield. This piece of software basically creates a secure tunnel for your data that runs between the Wi-Fi router and your computer. This means Firesheep will not be able to steal any data passing between your computer and the router since all communications will be encrypted.

HTTPS Everywhere

If you're a Firefox user you can also use extensions such as HTTPS Everywhere built by the Electronic Frontier Foundation. This extension forces certain Websites to use a secure SSL connection for your entire browsing session instead of just the login. The problem with HTTPS Everywhere is it only works on a limited number of sites that support full SSL encrypted browsing. Often a site uses SSL encryption for your log in, but reverts you back to the non-encrypted HTTP standard after you've logged in. Check out the EFF's HTTPS Everywhere page for more information.

Use Strict Transport Security (STS)

Strict Transport Security (STS) is a relatively new security feature that is starting to appear in some browsers. STS automatically forces your browser to make a secure connection with every Web page that supports SSL encryption. Once you start using STS, you will not be able to use an insecure connection ever again when connecting to a specific site such as Facebook or Amazon. Chrome has supported STS since Chrome 4, and Firefox 4 will include STS when the official version launches in the coming months. Be aware that STS is still relatively new, and may not be available for all browsers.

Finally, if you don't have a password on your router at home, make sure you set one up. If your router supports WPA2 then use that security standard instead of the more widely used and less secure standard known as WEP.

Firesheep may make it easier than ever for someone to snoop on other people over open, unencrypted Wi-Fi, but keep in mind that sidejacking is an old trick that's been around since at least 2007. To stay safe just make sure that over an open Wi-Fi connection you are using a secure connection with a VPN or HTTPS (SSL). When at home use the WPA2 standard if your router supports it, or at the very least secure your router with a WEP password. Also, don't forget that you should never use an open Wi-Fi connection for highly sensitive online activities such as accessing your bank or credit card accounts.

yahoo flash:Radiation leaps after Japan plant blasts; Tokyo gets warning

FUKUSHIMA, Japan (Reuters) - Japan warned radioactive levels had become "significantly" higher around a quake-stricken nuclear power plant on Tuesday after explosions at two reactors, and the French embassy said a low-level radioactive wind could reach Tokyo within hours.
Prime Minister Naoto Kan urged people within 30 km (18 miles) of the facility north of Tokyo to remain indoors, underscoring the dramatic escalation of Japan's nuclear crisis, the world's most serious since the Chernobyl disaster in Ukraine in 1986.
As concern about the crippling economic impact of the nuclear and earthquake disasters mounted, Japanese stocks plunged more than 14 percent - heading for their biggest drop since 1987 -- compounding a slide of 7.6 percent the day before. The two-day fall has wiped $720 billion off the market.
In a sign of mounting fears about the risk of radiation, neighbouring China said it was strengthening monitoring and Air China said it had cancelled flights to Tokyo.
Several embassies advised staff and citizens to leave affected areas. Tourists cut short vacations and multinational companies either urged staff to leave or said they were considering plans to move outside the city.
But many Japanese were cancelling trips and staying put, saying now is not the time to leave home.
"There has been a fire at the No. 4 reactor and radiation levels in the surrounding area have heightened significantly. The possibility of further radioactive leakage is heightening," a grim-faced Kan said in an address to the nation.
"We are making every effort to prevent the leak from spreading. I know that people are very worried but I would like to ask you to act calmly."
As concerns rose over the nuclear accident, Japanese media became more critical of Kan's handling of the disaster and criticised the government and plant operator TEPCO for their failure to provide enough information on the incident.
The French Embassy in Tokyo warned in an 0100 GMT advisory that a low level of radioactive wind could reach the capital -- 240 km (150 miles) south of the plant -- in about 10 hours.
Winds over the facility were blowing slowly in a southwesterly direction that includes Tokyo but will shift westerly later on Tuesday, a weather official said.
Kyodo news agency said radiation levels nine times normal levels had been briefly detected in Kanagawa near Tokyo, but it quotes the metropolitan government that only "minute levels" were found in the capital itself.
"Very acute radiation, like that which happened in Chernobyl and to the Japanese workers at the nuclear power station, is unlikely for the population," said Lam Ching-wan, a chemical pathologist at the University of Hong Kong.
But the blasts could expose the population to longer-term exposure to radiation, which can raise the risk of thyroid and bone cancers and leukemia. Children in fetuses are especially vulnerable.
There have been a total of four explosions at the plant since it was damaged in last Friday's massive quake and tsunami. The most recent were blasts at reactors No. 2 and No. 4.
Authorities had previously been trying to prevent meltdowns in the Fukishima Daiichi complex's nuclear reactors by flooding the chambers with sea water to cool the reactors down.

There has been panic buying in Tokyo. Don Quixote, a multi-storey, 24-hour general store in Roppongi district, sold out of radios immediately after the quake. It also sold out of flashlights, candles, petrol containers and sleeping bags.
The full extent of the destruction from last Friday's massive quake and tsunami that followed it was still becoming clear, as rescuers combed through the region north of Tokyo where officials say at least 10,000 people were killed.
"It's a scene from hell, absolutely nightmarish," said Patrick Fuller of the International Red Cross Federation from the northeastern coastal town of Otsuchi.
Kan has said Japan is facing its worst crisis since World War Two and, with the financial costs estimated at up to $180 billion, analysts said it could tip the world's third-biggest economy back into recession.
The U.S. Geological Survey upgraded the quake to magnitude 9.0, from 8.9, making it the world's fourth most powerful since 1900.
Car makers, shipbuilders and technology companies worldwide scrambled for supplies after the disaster shut factories in Japan and disrupted the global manufacturing chain.
BLAST DAMAGES ROOF, WORKERS TOLD TO LEAVE
The fear at the Fukushima plant is of a major radiation leak after the quake and tsunami knocked out cooling systems.
Jiji news agency said the first explosion on Tuesday damaged the roof and steam was rising from the complex. Some workers were also told to leave the plant, a development one expert had warned beforehand could signal a worsening of the crisis.
The accident and the response have prompted criticism that authorities were ill-prepared and revived debate in many countries about the safety of atomic power.
"You're above Three Mile Island but you're nowhere near a Chernobyl ... Chernobyl there was no impediment to release, it just blew everything out into the atmosphere," said Murray Jennex, professor at San Diego State University in California.
"You've still got a big chunk of the containment there holding most of it in."
Switzerland put on hold some approvals for nuclear power plants and Germany said it was scrapping a plan to extend the life of its nuclear power stations. The White House said U.S. President Barack Obama remained committed to nuclear energy.
Whilst the Fukuskima plant's No.1 and No.3 reactors both suffered partial fuel rod meltdowns, operator Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO) had earlier said the No.2 reactor was now the biggest concern.
A sudden drop in cooling water levels when a pump ran out of fuel had fully exposed the fuel rods for a time, an official said. This could lead to the rods melting down and a radioactive leak.
TEPCO had resumed pumping sea water into the reactor early on Tuesday.
U.S. warships and planes helping with relief efforts moved away from the coast temporarily because of low-level radiation. The U.S. Seventh Fleet described the move as precautionary.
South Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore and the Philippines said they would test Japanese food imports for radiation.
TOWNS FLATTENED
About 850,000 households in the north were still without electricity in near-freezing weather, Tohuku Electric Power Co. said, and the government said at least 1.5 million households lack running water. Tens of thousands of people were missing.
"The situation here is just beyond belief, almost everything has been flattened," said the Red Cross's Fuller in Otsuchi, a town all-but obliterated. "The government is saying that 9,500 people, more than half of the population, could have died and I do fear the worst."
Whole villages and towns have been wiped off the map by Friday's wall of water, triggering an international humanitarian effort of epic proportions.
Estimates of the economic impact are now starting to emerge.
Hiromichi Shirakawa, chief economist for Japan at Credit Suisse, said in a note to clients that the economic loss will likely be around 14-15 trillion yen ($171-183 billion) just to the region hit by the quake and tsunami.
Even that would put it above the commonly accepted cost of the 1995 Kobe quake which killed 6,000 people.
The earthquake has forced many firms to suspend production and global companies -- from semiconductor makers to shipbuilders -- face disruptions to operations after the quake and tsunami destroyed vital infrastructure, damaged ports and knocked out factories.
"The earthquake could have great implications on the global economic front," said Andre Bakhos, director of market analytics at Lec Securities in New York. "If you shut down Japan, there could be a global recession."

India can't win World Cup, Dhoni is dreaming: Dean Jones

Melbourne, March 13 (PTI): Given their weak bowling and unimpressive fielding even the high quality batsmen cannot save India's World Cup campaign, feels former Australian batsman Dean Jones who says winning the coveted trophy will remain just a dream for Mahendra Singh Dhoni's men.
"The three main common denominators consistent with all World Cup champion teams are: Your top four batsmen must be of a high quality. They must have the technique to play the new ball, as well as have the power and stroke play during powerplays. Your top four bowlers must be of high quality, able to absorb pressure and bowl defensively in powerplays. If you can't field, don't bother turning up!" Jones said in his column for "The Age". "All this taken into account, I do not believe India will win the World Cup with its current form. Tell Dhoni, he's dreaming," wrote Jones in his article.
Jones said that despite the presence of Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag in the team, who can rip any bowling attack to shreds, India cannot win the World Cup.
"Everyone here has a huge regard for the Indian team. They have the batsmen, no doubt. Tendulkar and Sehwag can rip any attack to shreds. But that alone doesn't win the World Cup for India. He is dreaming," he said.
The former Aussie cricketer said that Dhoni's bowling combination comprising Zaheer Khan, Ashish Nehra, Piyush Chawla and Harbhajan Singh doesn't match the standards of any of the line-ups of the previous teams.
"Captain MS Dhoni has admitted some of his fieldsmen are very slow. But Dhoni believes he will win the World Cup with this bowling line-up: Zaheer Khan, Ashish Nehra, Piyush Chawla and Harbhajan Singh. Dhoni must turn to history to see that this bowling attack will not win a World Cup."

Ironically, Shah Rukh has also won the Filmfare award for the best actor for the same film.

'My Name Is Khan' also received the worst film award.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali won the worst director award for 'Guzaarish'. 'Guzaarish' also got Black Award for Emotional Blackmail.

Director Ram Gopal Varma was awarded the Bas Kijiye Bahut Ho Gaya Award (Please Stop Its Enough), asking him to stop making films.

The worst supporting actor male went to Arjun Rampal for 'Housefull', and worst supporting actress female went to Kangana Ranaut for 'Kites'.

Interestingly, out of five nominations in the category of supporting actress, three were for Kangana in 'No Problem', 'Once Upon A Time in Mumbaai' and 'Kites'.

Bawra Ho Gaya Hai Ke award (Have You Gone Nuts) was given to actor Ben Kingsley for his participation in the film 'Teen Patti'.

However, there was a special category of 'Anti-Kela' awards for the films that were the saving graces of 2010. The awards were for the films that were meaningful and entertaining, while still being in the mainstream.

Those awarded in this category were 'Udaan', 'Ishqiya', 'Love, Sex and Dhoka', 'Do Dooni Chaar', 'Peepli Live' and 'Tere Bin Laden'.

'I think we should learn to make fun of our own work and I think it's just fun although it's tough because we make a lot of bad films. It will be easy to choose good films but it will be difficult to choose worst work,' said Vishal Bhardwaj, producer of 'Ishqiya, who was present at the award ceremony hosted by Cyrus Broacha in Rockdome at the Ambience Mall in Gurgaon.

'Ishqiya' director Abhisek Chaubey added: 'Nobody wants to admit that they have made the worst film and coming here would be admitting it, nobody really wants to believe that they did something worst. But really hope people who are nominated see the lighter side of it and come here.'

Small-budget film 'Udaan' swept this year's prestigious Filmfare awards and here also it won the Anti-Kela for being 2010's 'saving grace'.

'Being given an award by people who are looking for bad stuff in films means a lot,' said director Vikramaditya Motwane in a video message.

Meanwhile, Aditya Narayan and Pakhi Tyrewala were awarded the Golden Kela for worst debut male and female for 'Shaapit' and 'Jhootha Hi Sahi' respectively.

Actor Uday Chopra was given the Chimpu Kapoor award (No talent award for relatives of celebrities).

news of terrible tsunami injapan

Tokyo:  Rescuers struggled to reach survivors on Saturday morning as Japan reeled after an earthquake and a tsunami struck in deadly tandem. The 8.9-magnitude earthquake set off a devastating tsunami that sent walls of water washing over coastal cities in the north. Concerns mounted over possible radiation leaks from two nuclear plants near the earthquake zone.

The death toll from the tsunami and earthquake, the strongest ever recorded in Japan, was in the hundreds, but Japanese news media quoted government officials as saying that it could rise to more than 1,300, most of them drowned. About 200 to 300 bodies were found along the waterline in Sendai, a port city in northeastern Japan and the closest major city to the epicenter.

Thousands of homes were destroyed, many roads were impassable, trains and buses were not running, and power and cellphones remained down. On Saturday morning, the JR rail company said that there were three trains missing in parts of two northern prefectures.

While the loss of life and property may yet be considerable, many lives were certainly saved by Japan's extensive disaster preparedness and strict construction codes. Japan's economy was spared a more devastating blow because the earthquake hit far from its industrial heartland.
Japanese officials on Saturday issued broad evacuation orders for people living in the vicinity of two separate nuclear power plants that had experienced breakdowns in their cooling systems as a result of the earthquake, and they warned that small amounts of radiation could leak from both plants. Japanese television reported that officials said they had detected cesium near one of the reactors at one of the plants, and The Associated Press quoted a nuclear safety official as saying a meltdown was possible at that reactor.
